Default For those who got Scammed(being harsh here)

Ok, I feel like no one has said this yet, and it is in desperate need that someone finally says it.

For those of you who got scammed from players on GW. I say Quit your whining. It takes 2 people to pull off a scam. The Scammer, and the idiot...err the scammed. Now, if you got scammed, sorry that it happened to you, but that is all of the Sympathy you will gain from me. It is not my fault you did something rather dumb to get scammed. For example. "If you do these things I will give you 100k Gold, buy me this, this, this, this, and that." And if you actually are dumb enough to buy these things, then you are just dumb. First of all, why would he want you to buy these items IF HE HAS 100k TO JUST GIVE OUT!?! That's like...wow....no common sense?

Another Example "OMG my friend got Scammed. He was going to trade 100 Ecto for 100k, but instead of 100k, he put 100 gold" <--- Dumb Friend
First of all, he got double analed there. Ecto can sell for crazy price as it is, not 1k each, and If someone is going to trade an item, and going to trade that item for 100k, you should be smart enough TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE TRADE

Hence, Scammed Players, stop your whining because you were a MAJOR part of this stupid act.

So stop posting your crying, stop posting your whining, and just post the name of the person who scammed you, and suck it up. Everyone gets scammed, it happens, stop complaining like you are the only one it happens it. It probably happens to 20 players a day with ease, even more then that, and do you see every single person putting it up here? No.

You get scammed, you learned 2 things. A Very Valuable Lesson, and Who is the name of the Scammer to give out a warning of who this person is.

Take a Screen Shot of what happened, and send put it on here, and report them. Hope the justice you can get is getting them banned at that time, or caught later on. But coming here posting your tears is not going to get you help.

The people I have sympathy for, are the people who have to hear your cries all the time. It sucks to get scammed, I know it does, it happened to me when I 1st started playing, but I laughed about it because it is a GAME, and not the end of the world. Plus, you learn not to make that mistake twice (hopefully)

Anyway, sorry for the large post, I am just getting sick of seeing complainers with get scammed, and do 99% of complaining, and no help for others.

Names of scammers have been posted. Maybe not on this forum, but it has. I am putting this here because 99999 of the 99999 complainers of getting scammed come here to whine about it.

Complaining about complainers isn't very effective.

This is not a complaint to them. This is to tell them to simply shut up, suck it up, or post information that will be helpful, and not stupid crap.

Wow, a thread with a big indirect note to me in it!

But honestly, I was not complaining, but rather informing the public. Also, I did post the names, they were politely edited out by a mod. Which is fine by me, since I'm not really vindictive enough to get them banned over a few thousand gold.

And I'm pretty sick of these "complain about complainers" threads. Probably even more so than "complaint" threads because they don't really address any issues other than other people's complaints.

So, yeah. A lot of people getting scammed sure didn't use common sense. And a lot were just greedy. You can choose to show sympathy or not. Your choice.

But I found the phrase "It takes 2 people to pull off a scam. The Scammer, and the idiot...err the scammed..." taking too much blame off the scammer. In real life, it's the elderly folk that get scammed the most because they are easy targets. So does that mean that they deserve/asked for it?

Dear topic creater, it was discussed before on Gamefaqs.com forums, if someone scammed the other by giving him 100 gold instead of 100k he wouldn't be banned if reported, because the TWO PEOPLE HAVE TO ACCEPT THE TRADE ( sorry for caps ) so if the scammed person accepted it's his fault, and he can whine about it as much as he wants.

The way I see it, you're indirectly whining about scammers, betcha you still get scammed lol.

The next big thing will be complaining about complainers who complain about complainers. After that, it'll be all about complaining about the complainers who complain about complainers who complain about complainers. I'm not even going to go into what comes next.

its easy to avoid scams:
1) if in trade always double check EVERYTHING
2) if in trade tell them that you will take a screenshot of the transaction
3) if being run tell them that you will take a screenshot when you hand your money over
4) encourage everyone else on the team to do the same

always tell them that you have proof to give them a chance to change their plan.

it is not being paranoid it is being sensible... runners often make sure that their passengers have the money to pay for the run - you make sure they don't have a viable option of scamming you.

its not that i trust no-one but that i can't trust a few... and i don't know who they are.

Scamming is just part of the game, just as it is in everyday life. True, scammers IMO are scum, preying on the gullible, but only a bit of thought is required to stop them.

I'm interested to know what scams are being perpetrated out there so I can learn from other peoples' mistakes, and no doubt, there will be an element of frustration and anger towards the scammer in every "OMG I got scammed" post, but I say, let the victim inform the community. Names are not necessary, but the MO is very important.

I dont get it with reporting scammers, Anet dont give a F*** about how u lost 10k..etc... Scammers dont, and never will get banned, happens in all MMOs, maybe hackers do, but getting scammed is like giveing sum1 ur car keys and saying they stole the car. Its plain stupid and a waste of time typing complaints to Anet.

Well since scamming is up there on the anti-social scale, the easiest solution is to go in the opposite direction in the anti-social scale and just not interact with anyone. This game is very low on the need people and resources scale, so you can get bye with doing so, but in others this style of behavior is not regularly punished enough to really weed it out. In the end it just leads to even more anti-social behavior and doesnt do anything useful. This being said, the entire premis of doing such acts is rather contrary towards the environment that makes an online game, an online game. This being the interpersonal interactions between individuals. Otherwise we all might as well go back to console style single player gaming. Also, social adaptation towards learning within the quasi-reality environment doesnt wash either, due to the fact that not all individuals are of the same state of being. This is otherwise known as taking advantage of children, while trying to hide behind the anominty the internet provides. Of course if these individuals did such acts in real life, they would eventually get caught and find themselves in court, especially when dealing with the children bit.

Now, here, you've made a definitive statement based on a general assumption - (i.e game will suffer due to anti-social behaviour, as the "easiest" solution is to not interact)

The fact is that yes, in-game scammers exist and they would not be banned. They won't be hauled up in court or punished, because *gasp* they're not stealing real money.

The game is based on choices that each player makes, and their own status and balance will vary based on those choices, such as investion in certain items as prices fluctuate or drop, the purchases they make etc. - Being scammed is again down to the victim.

The easiest solution is NOT to behave in an antisocial manner, ignoring all offers or not accepting players, but simply to apply a bit of logic to each scenario when faced with a decision.

For Example - If you're on a scavenger hunt, and a complete stranger asks for Ectos, sapphires etc. just to offer you the CHANCE of winning 100k, do you give them the items?

In the same way, if you recieve an email asking you to send £5.00 to 10 people on a list to recieve a free Ipod, do you do it?

Anti-social behaviour is not the answer. Just a little awareness and common sense, however is a much better option.

Well, that definately would keep you from getting scammed, but it's rather radical, isn't it?

A less drastic way would be, not to easily trust people.
Like somebody wrote on this or another thread:
If it's too good to be true: don't trust it.

While in the FoW I found an obsidian shard? and even before I could pick it up a monk bugged me, if he could have it. He'd pay a good price for it. 1K.
Since it was my first time in the FoW and it was my first shard, and I wasn't up on shard-prices, and since I stated earlier in the chat, that it was my first time to the FoW, the monk thought, he could get his hands easily on a shard.
The more he begged, the more distrust I put into what he whispered to me.

It's really sad, that the answer to "how do I avoid scamms" should be "don't trust people", but what choice (except your proposed: don't interact at all) do we have?

So you're saying, we need more punishment?
Why not create more awareness?
Tell people about how they can get scamed, so they can act more alert next time.

And don't use the term 'weed' for it's on aNets blacklist of words that you can't use in character names, whose removal I was promised weeks ago without any result.
